Class 3~ Ithaca is still Gorges!

This week I got to get the Lava Project's name out in the city of Ithaca as I found out through one of the museum workers that the Tompkins County Library has a science literacy program that encourages the public to read about scientific subjects annually. This year's theme is called "Fizz, Boom, READ!" which I (of course) immediately referenced to volcanoes and thus The Lava Project.
I had a meeting with a presenter who plans to teach young library visitors (ages 3-6) this summer on the subject of volcanoes. The purpose of our meeting was to enhance her plan of attack for educating the public on the subject as she was new to it. I think it went well and I am excited to inspire some future scientists in this town! This week was also mostly spent further developing the hopeful plans for an actual lava pour by the Syracuse University Earth Sciences Department at the Cayuga Nature Center here in Ithaca. Fingers crossed!

  1. Whoa, the theme for the library is perfect for the Lava Project! Would you be able to bring in a guest speaker to the library that's involved in the Lava Project (maybe you)? Are there any other opportunities to spread the Lava Project, for example to an older audience too?

  2. I think that it's really awesome that you're going to be able to tie in your Lava Project with a reading literacy program! So many kids struggle with reading, so I think it's really important to help improve their reading skills. & I agree with Beth, it would be really cool if you could go speak at the program about the Lava Project!
